Experiencing what you don't want to try is especially useful in the art world. While I was still in art class, I DID NOT want to go out to some place in the middle of a field with dead trees and grass and hay, and have to draw multiple scenes using a baggy of colored pencils. But I did.
When we all came back, we were told we had to take one of those sketches and turn them into a full blown pic using one of the two mediums: oil pastel, or chalk...I hated both of those with a passion. But I did it anyway, and the final result came out bangin'. In short, I benefited from those experiences.
Really, taking art classes <in class> is not a thing you want to miss if you're serious.

I agree with you. If not for the simple experience of pooling ideas. I thought I knew so much about art when I got out of High School, and most of it I'd looked up on my own. Then I got into college and started taking classes and I realize I still have only touched the tip of the iceberg (I'm graduated, and I know there's still a lot I'd like to go back and learn.) There's something to say for at least having someone to help guide you to discovering new things. And I got so many ideas and was so inspired just by sitting in art history classes.

It's also neat to have a perspective on art as a career. I mean, back in the day artists weren't considered to creative and idealistic and all that: they were craftsmen, and they were kinda looked down upon in many cases. But now, artists are looked at in such a different light, it's neat to learn the background of your interests.

I also liked having a nice open space to work. I live in a tiny trailer, so space is really limited, and I found I was most productive when I was taking classes where I could go to campus and the room was right there for me.

...you can always order some texts books online--but that can expensive. Amazon usually has some decent prices for used books. And since the subject's art, you really probably could go with some college level books-I'm sure you can handle the material :)

Are you looking for "how to" or "history" books? I have a couple suggestions...but I'll have to hunt down my books.

Okay, I'll have to get back to you--can you send me a PM to remind me to look those up? It shouldn't take me too long, but I'm gonna hang out with some friends later tonight, so I probably can't get back to you until tomorrow or so. Is that okay?

You can also find local classes available to the public.

You gotta learn the rules first so you'll know how to break 'em properly, Narutofox.

You have to get your regular license to drive on public roads before you can become a racecar driver and speed for a living. :)

You have to learn how to do art "properly" before you can call the elements of your art's style intentional. Otherwise, they're just considered mistakes.
