Gimp's a lot easier to work with for beginners. I've been using PS for a year now and I'm still trying to figure out some stuff.
It'll take many years before you learn all the uses of PS and even then they add more new things with each edition. For example, you can do animation (simple ones) on PS plus they added this new 3D thing on there.

@ LVUER
Yeah, using vector is great for cel-shading but terrible if you want to do anything painterly style. :\

You could always make the lineart in SAI (or Flash in my case), and then export it (or just open the PNG files) in Photoshop or Painter.

I've been using Photoshop since I was 7 years old, so that's why I prefer it. I'm fairly well acquainted with most of the features.

I use SAI for lineart and colouring. Yes PS is superior in many cases, but i feel that SAI has all of the tools there and is much easier to become used to than PS

I dunno. I was trying out SAI one time and there was something I wanted to do but couldn't find it on SAI. :\
I think I was trying to type some text onto the image, iirc.

Sai is God tier for anime art and a lot of other art. It's not only got the vector lines, it's got this neato pen selection tool that works with the magic wand tool. You can use the pen selection tool to fill in broken lines and then when you go to use the magic wand tool, it recognizes where the selection pen tool was marked. Coloring in images by hand is so archaic. It's one of the reasons I don't use photoshop for my anime art.

Another is the lack of lag. Paint Tool Sai is so lightweight. It opens super fast and almost never lags for me. It doesn't have much useless features and if you want some extra features from Photoshop, you can just export your file as a psd and continue it in PS.

I don't get what's so good about Sai...then again I don't know if it's been updated from the 2 years ago I last used it. I'm speaking from bad experiences with it, so I'm gonna download it again today and test drive it...and see if it still sucks.

I also don't really know about SAI since I've never use it firsthand, but lots of artist and my friends (which also draw a lot) praise SAI for its lineart. Lineart, not coloring.

MS Paint for lineart! I love to use it for sketching out stuff :)

I also have PS CS2, Painter X and Corel draw X4
(yay for free legal university licenses, i can even use maya 2010, studio max and rhinoceros for free if I want too =3 )

Most of my stuff however is done with plain paper and pencils ;-)

I love SAI. It would be the most beautiful woman in the world if it was a person.

I like Coral painter too, because I felt a similar experience of painting traditionally.

OpenCanvas is sometimes tricky to use. :/

I used OpenCanvas one time, and that was before I got a tablet. I liked how much stuff there was, but I didn't have a tablet. And my trial has kinda long since expired.

Sai hasn't given me any trouble yet. It's good for lineart, but I find myself using it for sketching a lot more, probably since I don't do much lineart in the first place.

I use everything which I get my hands on. But I love open canvas.
Also, various non-commercial things like Gimp or Inkscape
Various things for various uses.
