This is specifically for people who write and draw manga, graphic novels or comics. Who do you get your influences from? For an example of what I mean, I will tell you my influences....for people who read my stories, my artistic influences would be Oh!Great's, Tenjou Tenge and Kentaro Miura's, Berserk....my story telling influences would be J.R.R. Tolkien, this is because, like him, I try and create a detail history to make the world I create seem real and I put a lot of detail into each individual person(story wise..)....though this is mainly because of the movies, but the lord of the rings also influenced my drawings and why I changed Kreapers into more of a hyper-fantasy story, than what I originally intended, which was fantasy but a mix of sci fi...but thats gonna be another story of mine called Kreapers: The Forgotten Age(Yes, I have three stories in the Kreapers universe,(The Golden Age, The Fallen Age and the Forgotten Age). Any who, what are your influences?(man, I've used that word quite a lot)....and if this Topic is in the wrong place....sorry.

Oda (One Piece). Not his art (usually), but the story. Kishimoto (Naruto)is good as well is Takei (Shaman King and Ultimo). I like Togashi because YuYuHakusho is kind of realistic. And Amano (REBORN!) isn't bad either.

I also find DnD inspirational as well as WoW and other RPGs. As are martial arts. Music is important too. Linkin Park and TDG were inspirational for this, but that got way too depressing to write. My newest idea has a MUCH more western feel.

My greatest artistic influence, hands down, is Yabuki Kentari (Black Cat, To Love Ru, Mayoi Neko Overrun).

As far as stories, I don't know my influences. I write what comes to my head. I don't read much aside from manga anymore. Maybe Kenichi . . . but I have no superhumans (anymore, because I used to). Black Cat got me going in the bioweapon area (which I've recently left behind).

Like I said before, I just don't know.

I think that the key, is to have many influences. Then you have a grab bag of goodies to cherry-pick.

I'm influenced by a whole mess of mangakas, mainly because I pick up little tips and tricks from whatever animes I watch (and the ratio of anime watched to manga read is about fifty to one...I don't live near a bookstore, so it's not like I can get to a Borders whenever I want. But I watch anime on the Internet, and I refuse to read manga that way, so that probably tears it right there~ Death to eReaders!). But, moving on...

CLAMP is a major influence. Major major. After all I've learned, it may be hard to see it, but, trust me, I'd be nowhere without them. Natsuki Takaya is a pretty big influence, too. (By now, my gender should be verrry clear, if you haven't read the sidebar...and the fact that I'm pretty big on the shojo genre. xD) Noizi Ito is on the list, too...and, to wrap up the major ones, the character designer for "Romeo X Juliet," Hiroki Harada.

So there. xD

Looking up Hayao Miyazaki now . . .

Oh, I'll have to credit Noizi Ito for some of my influence--the Haruhi anime did it for me. Also, I'm starting to learn some from Tony Taka.

Hayao Miyazaki is a film maker, director, writer, and artist. He created many of my favorite anime movies, including "Spirited Away" which won best animated film of the year I think in 2003, or somewhere around there.

Ponyo. Spirited Away. My Neighboor Totoro. Catsle in the Sky. Howl's Moving Castle.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU MATT!!?

Anyway, he's cool, but not an inspiration. Also, CLAMP is an abomination.

I've never seen any of those!

But if it's all the style I've seen in pics of Spirited Away . . . meh. Not an artistic influence.

Meh, art isn't great because it is all hand drawn, almost no computer graphics, which makes it amazing. But he is more of an influence for storylines especially if you like fantasy oriented stuff.

Masakazu Katsura is a big influence of mine.

Also Yoshihiro Togashi for writing quite possibly the best Manga ever created.. and also not Yoshihiro Togashi for going on hiatus so often when I so desperately want to read said manga ><

Edit: I should read Topics more carefully, I haven't written any comics yet but I guess you could say I highly respect the work of the author/artists above.

I'm gonna Takeshi Obata. 1.) For drawing Death Note & Bakuman 2.) For influencing the art of Yusuke Murata (Eyeshield 21), Kentaro Yabuki (Black Cat) & Nobuhiro Watsuki (Rurouni Kenshin, Buso Renkin, Frankenstein)

For writing, quite a few people here (you should know who you are).

But the published ones: Phillip Pullman (His Dark Materials), Malorie Blackman (Noughts & Crosses trilogy), etc...
